For Amanda Crehan and Jacintha Atkinson-Manson, the path to law took unexpected turns but led to a shared commitment to mentoring the next generation of legal professionals.
Amanda’s career was sparked by a jury duty experience, leading her to pursue a law degree in the UK. She became an equity partner at a prominent firm before moving to New Zealand in 2014, quickly becoming dual qualified and rising to partnership once again.
Jacintha originally planned to work in paediatrics but shifted to law and psychology. She began in general practice and has practised in Nelson for nearly 12 years. Both women acknowledge the importance of mentors. Amanda credits trailblazing female lawyers, while Jacintha considers her business partner a key mentor. “Amanda is wonderful and someone I have looked up to. I also attended a fantastic chamber-led leadership course and am working with business coach Rebecca Morris.”
Although law has become more inclusive, women still face challenges in reaching equity partnership or board positions, with men outnumbering women by a third. “At Atkinson Crehan, we’re proud to support young women balancing study, work, and family.”
Both believe in celebrating achievements. “Women’s accomplishments must be recognised,” says Amanda. “I continue to hear stories of women erased from history – ‘Hidden Figures’ is a great example. Never stop striving and always support each other.” Jacintha agrees, saying, “International Women’s Day reminds us to uplift each other, reflect on our achievements, and give ourselves a well-deserved pat on the back!”
